Are you thinking about getting veneers to disguise aesthetic imperfections in your teeth? They can be an effective way to hide things like chips, cracks, discoloration, and more. But how long do veneers last? Will they last long enough for them to be worth the time and money it takes to get them? This blog post explains what you should know.
Porcelain Veneers Are Very Durable
When people talk about veneers, they are usually talking about porcelain veneers. As the name implies, they are made of dental-grade porcelain that is shaded and polished in a way that makes it look like natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers usually take at least two dental appointments to design and place. They are one of the higher-priced cosmetic dentistry options.
One great feature of porcelain veneers is that they are extremely durable. They are not easily stained, and they are strong enough to stand up to regular eating habits. With proper care, they may last for 10 – 15 years or longer. Some patients even have theirs for 20 years or more before replacement becomes necessary.
Lumineers Are Another Great Option
Lumineers are a special type of porcelain veneer, designed to be ultra-thin. This reduces the tooth preparation that is required, which equates to a simpler treatment process.
Even though Lumineers are quite strong, they may not last as long as traditional porcelain veneers. Still, with proper care, some patients find that their Lumineers last for 5 – 10 years or even longer.
Composite Veneers — Affordable but Less Durable
Some patients opt for composite veneers (also called resin veneers), which are made of a tooth-colored resin that gets molded over the teeth. The treatment process is fast and easy; it can usually be completed in a single appointment. Plus, composite veneers tend to have a lower price point than porcelain veneers and Lumineers.
The biggest downside of this option is that composite veneers are not as durable as other treatments. They last for 5 – 7 years on average, though they may last for up to 10 years with diligent care.
Getting the Most Out of Your Veneers
Regardless of which type of veneers you choose, you need to take care of them if you want them to stand the test of time. Here are some basic tips to help you do that:
- Maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Use a minimally abrasive toothpaste and a soft toothbrush.
- Make wise eating and drinking choices. Enjoy highly pigmented foods in moderation. Avoid biting directly into hard foods with your veneers.
- Protect your veneers. If you play sports or tend to grind your teeth at night, wear a mouthguard that can protect your oral tissues and your veneers.
- Attend regular dental visits. Your dentist can provide personalized advice to help you care for your veneers.
