The majority of plans are mainly designed to help patients easily afford routine services like checkups and cleanings, which allow for minor issues to be treated quickly or avoided entirely. Insurance can also be used to offset the cost of more involved treatments, like fillings or crowns, but usually at a lower rate compared to preventive ones.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
It's important to note that dental insurance coverage can vary quite a bit from policy to policy, although the “100-80-50” model is very common among a lot of providers. For details around your specific plan, be sure and call our dental office. In a lot of cases, it looks something like this:
- Preventive treatments (checkups, cleanings, X-rays) are covered 100%
- Basic restorative treatments (bonding, fillings) are covered 80%
- Advanced restorative treatments (crowns, dentures, extractions) are covered 50%
Typically, cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance because they are elective treatments, though this can change if a procedure is being used to repair damage in addition to enhancing the appearance of the smile.
