The 3 Main Types of Dental Implant Restorations

There are multiple types of dental implants, but most of them are basically the same; they are inserted into the jawbone to serve as prosthetic tooth roots. There are also different types of dental implant restorations, a fact that makes dental implants one of the most versatile ways to recomplete a smile. They can replace any number of missing teeth! Let’s talk about the three main categories of restorations: crowns, bridges, and dentures.

Crowns: Single Tooth Replacement

You are probably familiar with traditional dental crowns, which get fitted over a damaged tooth to restore its strength and function. An implant-supported crown is similar. However, it isn’t placed on a natural tooth. Rather, it is secured to the top of a dental implant.

Implant-supported crowns are ideal for most people who are missing a single tooth. They can replace teeth in the upper or lower arch, as well as in the front of the mouth or in the back. They look extremely natural and tend to last longer than traditional bridges.

Bridges: Replacing Multiple Teeth in a Row

A traditional dental bridge replaces one or more teeth by relying on the surrounding natural teeth for support. An implant-supported bridge is different. Instead of relying on your remaining teeth for support, it is secured in the mouth via dental implants. With a single implant for support, this type of restoration can replace as few as two teeth in a row, or it can be used to replace up to five teeth in a row with just two dental implants.

Dentures: Full-Arch Tooth Replacement

If you have suffered extensive tooth loss, your dentist may recommend that you receive an implant denture. This type of prosthetic replaces either all of the upper or lower teeth, and it is secured in place by a number of strategically placed dental implants. The exact number of implants depends on the state of the jawbone and other factors.

There are different types of implant dentures, including those that are permanently fixed in place, as well as those that are easy to remove. Both types look natural and provide secure, reliable, and long-lasting function.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you have lost one or more teeth, the chances are good that dental implants can help you. After your dentist evaluates your oral health and reviews your medical history, they’ll talk to you about your treatment options and recommend the type of restoration that would be best for your unique situation. The process takes several months, but the end result is well worth it. Hopefully, you will soon have a strong, sturdy, and beautiful restoration to replace the empty space in your smile!
